Listening to the Universe: Meditation, Flow, and the Bat Kol

Listening to the Universe: Meditation, Flow, and the Bat Kol

Inspired by the ideas of Itzhak Bentov

For centuries mystics have said that the universe is not silent, rather It constantly tries to communicate with us

In Jewish mystical tradition this subtle voice is called the Bat Kol, the sweet voice; often seen as a lesser form of prophecy. It is considered a means of communication from the divine to humanity, accessible to all, unlike direct prophecy which is reserved for specific individuals

It is not thunder from the sky, but a quiet resonance that appears when the mind becomes still

Interestingly, modern thinkers like Itzhak Bentov proposed something surprisingly similar from a scientific perspective; suggesting that the universe behaves like a giant oscillating system, expanding and contracting with a cosmic heartbeat

and thru us the universe experiences itself

Bentov proposed that the human nervous system behaves like a resonant structure

When the body becomes calm, especially in meditation, subtle oscillations in the brain and circulatory system synchronize

In the language of Kabbalah, the human being is a microcosm of the cosmos. The same patterns that shape the universe also appear within the human soul. So as experienced practitioners have witnessed, meditation does not create new information

The Flow of the Universe

If the universe oscillates; expanding, contracting, vibrating, then reality may be less like a machine and more like a dance

Bentov often described this as the universe “breathing.”

Mystical traditions described something similar through the idea of divine emanation

Creation unfolds, returns, unfolds again. The flow moves through everything:

  • galaxies
  • ecosystems
  • human creativity
  • and moments of intuition

When we align with this rhythm, life feels like flow instead of friction

Hearing the Divine Voice

The Bat Kol is sometimes described as a heavenly echo

But many mystics believed it is not external at all

It emerges when:

  • the mind becomes quiet
  • the body relaxes
  • attention becomes spacious

At that moment, insight appears.

Not as a command, but as a gentle knowing. A coincidence. 11:11

The Cosmic Joke

One of Bentov’s favorite ideas was that the universe might be consciousness playing with itself

meditation is a way of remembering that we are participants in the same cosmic process that formed stars and galaxies
