Meditation #1 — From Anxiety to Trust

Meditation #1 — From Anxiety to Trust

A short contemplative journey guided by Psalms

For centuries, seekers have used sacred words to calm the mind and open the heart; In Jewish tradition, the book of Psalms has often been used as prayer and meditation

Mystics taught that repeating sacred phrases gradually quiets the mind until a deeper awareness emerges; what some traditions call the Bat Kol, the subtle inner echo of wisdom

This exercise can take five minutes or an hour, depending on how long you rest with each verse. You may whisper, chant, or simply repeat the words internally

Step 1 — Arrive

Sit comfortably

Take a slow breath

Imagine the noise of the day settling like dust

Repeat slowly:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Tehilim 46:10

Repeat

Let the words slow your breathing

Step 2 — Remember Protection

When the mind quiets, bring attention to trust

Repeat:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not lack anything.”

Tehilim 23:1

Imagine being guided through uncertainty

If worries appear, simply return to the words

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me."

Step 3 — Gratitude

Now shift the feeling toward gratitude.

Repeat:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His mercy endures forever.”

Tehilim 136:1

Let each repetition become lighted

Almost like singing

Many mystics chant these verses slowly

Step 4 — The Inner Voice

After repeating the verses several times, pause

Sit quietly

Notice the stillness

In mystical language, this quiet space is where the Bat Kol may be heard

A sense of peace

A piece of advice

Trust in your decisions

Step 5 — Return

Take one deep breath

Remember one thing you are grateful for today

Carry that feeling back into your day

Optional practice

During a commute or walk:

  • repeat a single verse rhythmically
  • synchronize it with breathing
  • let the mind settle into the words

Over time the phrases become anchors of calm
