Sephardic Jews in New York’s Capital Region: Finding a Home at Our Local Chabad Shul
I, the author, have been in Albany for a few months, and even before moving I wondered: “Is there a Sephardic synagogue in Albany?” or “Where can Spanish-speaking Jews find community in the Capital Region?”
With my experience in leadership and volunteering in diverse communities, is easy to fit in everywhere, but I obviously prefer to follow the traditions I learned from my parents
So I was very pleasantly surprised to feel at home at the Shteeble. In general, Chabad is more compatible with our style, but here in particular Sephardic traditions are welcomed and respected. You’ll find siddurim that follow Sephardic customs, and even some prayer books with Spanish translations that help make services more accessible for Spanish-speaking Jews and families
Whether your family comes from Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Argentina, Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Syria, or elsewhere, there is a place for you here
Our daily minyanim and Shabbat services bring together people from many walks of Jewish life. Some are lifelong synagogue-goers. Others are rediscovering their heritage after many years away. Some are students, young professionals, converts, interfaith families, or people simply curious about Judaism
And just like we do in every sephardic community, the only question we ask is whether you need a place to eat
Shabbat is especially meaningful. Beyond services, community members often open their homes to guests for meals. If you’re new to the area, traveling, studying, or simply looking for Jewish community, we encourage you to reach out. Sharing a Shabbat table is one of the most beautiful ways to experience Jewish life
We also warmly welcome Latinos who are exploring their Jewish roots, Sephardic heritage, or simply looking for a friendly Jewish community in Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, and throughout New York’s Capital Region
