After returning from my first Burning Man I was very inspired to do something to build communities. Our initiative to support Latinos in tech started as a happy hour in the coworking space I used to be in
There were early signs that some volunteers were more interested in their personal benefit, instead of dealing with it head on, I disassociated and avoid it for years. By the time I was trying to regain control they had a non profit , board, salaries, and the loyalty of many members
It affected my mental health, wallet, friendships and many relationships in ways I’m still recovering
Thankfully our strategy was successful, with little side effects for members, and the many city chapters and thousands of members continue being my favorite community
