The Divine Feminine, the Divine Masculine, and the Courage to Become Whole
One of the recurring themes across Jewish mysticism is that creation is not born from uniformity but from relationship. The universe emerges through balance: concealment and revelation, justice and compassion, giving and receiving, potential and actuality
Many modern conversations describe this as masculine and feminine energy. While those words can be helpful, they are also easy to misunderstand and have been abused by institutions to hurt women
Understanding what these energies are, as metaphors and practical wisdom is essential for manifesting
The sages often describe the Shekhinah, the Divine Presence, as the aspect of holiness that dwells among humanity, accompanies us in exile, and longs for reunion. Other Divine attributes are described as overflowing, initiating, judging, or bestowing. Their interaction reflects a cosmic dance rather than a hierarchy
This symbolism appears throughout medieval Kabbalistic literature, especially in works associated with the Zohar. Earlier Jewish thought also speaks of humanity being created “male and female” in the Divine image, suggesting that every human being reflects something larger than simple biological categories
Rather than asking oneself whether we are “masculine enough” or “feminine enough,” perhaps the better question is:
What qualities am I neglecting?
Am I all action without reflection?
All ambition without compassion?
All structure without creativity?
All empathy without boundaries?
The language changes across cultures, but the principle remains surprisingly consistent. Ancient philosophy spoke of complementary opposites
Medieval Jewish mysticism described harmonizing the sefirot. Even modern psychology recognizes that mature people integrate qualities often stereotyped as belonging to one gender or another
Potential and Actuality
A rabbi once explained an idea that has stayed with me: creation is the meeting of potential and actuality
A seed contains possibility
The earth nurtures it
Rain awakens it
Sunlight calls it upward
None of these forces alone create a tree
Creation happens through relationship
Perhaps this is why Genesis presents creation itself as a sequence of separations followed by harmonies. Light and darkness. Heaven and earth. Sea and land. Humanity itself exists through relationships with God, with one another, and with creation
The universe is a conversation
Language Is Not Reality
Living between English, Spanish, and Hebrew has made me appreciate how strange language can be
Spanish assigns grammatical gender to almost every noun, Hebrew does the same; but obviously grammatical gender is not the same thing as biological sex or philosophical identity
A chair is grammatically feminine in one language and masculine in another
A hand changes grammatical gender depending on which language you speak
Many Hebrew words ending with what looks like a feminine ending function differently than outsiders expect. Grammar is a tool, not a metaphysical declaration
Languages evolve for historical and linguistic reasons, not because they perfectly encode the structure of reality
That is one reason I hesitate when political arguments treat grammar itself as the center of moral life. Whether someone prefers Latino, Latina, or Latinx is often less important than whether people have meaningful work, safe neighborhoods, good schools, healthy families, and opportunities to create beautiful things together
Language can be hurtful to some people, so there’s merit in being careful with one’s words, but lengthy conversations about precision are usually wasteful
The Risk of Literalism
Mystical language was never meant to be flattened into simplistic slogans
Saying that the “feminine” is only nurturing while the “masculine” is only punishment misses the richness of Jewish thought. We cannot comprehend or reduce the divine
Simple people confuse the metaphors for reality, they take the joke too literally. And while I love literal jokes (they’re like jokes but literally); studies requires us to speak in the language of human beings because finite minds need images to approach the Infinite
The attributes described by the sages are ways of contemplating God, not boxes that contain God
Harmony Over Tribalism
Our age loves binaries. Left versus right infighting is great for likes and brand deals and terrible for people
Science versus religion is hilarious for twitter and useless at home
Men versus women is great for reality TV and a stupid idea in religious spaces
Tradition versus progress sells business workshops and, ironically, slows down innovation
Creation itself suggests another path, as galaxies form through attraction and tension music depends on harmony and dissonance
Healthy communities need builders, dreamers, teachers, caregivers, artists, organizers, skeptics, and visionaries
We must be cultivating the virtues we lack while appreciating those found in others, individually and together
The mystical traditions of Judaism invite us toward wholeness and reflect the many facets of the Divine image with wisdom, humility, compassion, courage, discipline, imagination, and love
And if our spiritual discussions do not ultimately help us feed people, build communities, create beauty, seek justice, and treat one another with dignity, then we may have mistaken the map for the destination
The Other Team Matters
Watching the World Cup is such a joy that transcends borders. Millions of people celebrate victories and mourn defeats. Every four years manly men get to cry in public
The challenge and hardship makes it what it is, playing with no opponent, or against a group of children wouldn’t make it so entertaining
Life is better with worthy opponents, and competition is not the opposite of unity. A team is a unit on its own and two teams form the unit for a game
The referees, players, spectators and announcers all give meaning to each other
Jewish thought often speaks about yetzer hara, the inclination that tempts us and makes free will possible. Like Satan, the adversary, the accuser, the force that creates genuine moral choice
Without resistance there is no courage. Without temptation there is no virtue. Without fear there’s no bravery
This tensions give space to creativity and it seems to be the lesson that our age keeps forgetting as more people rely on plagiarist generative AI to skip on the process
Politicians at the top know this, they’re all friends, and aware that it takes a few insults online to keep the people distracted. A government with no discern is a dictatorship and the illusion of democracy can be sustained longer
We need to seek similar partnerships inside of us and emanate from there to the rest of society
To become really human like Carlos Jung wants us to, to understand and love our shadows. Ignoring half of ourselves quickly turns into ignoring everything about ourselves and the world around us
In Kabbalists we seek to find the the missing sparks. In the Legend of Zelda we search every room in every dungeon to find the triforce. In Doom we climb odd places to find a Big Fucking Gun. Musicians travel the world to find new sounds
Team work is working with your team and your opponent. The conflict is only an illusion, you can break past it
