Summer Pet Safety Tips for Upstate New York

Summer is one of the best times to explore Upstate New York with your furry best friend. Whether you’re hiking local trails, relaxing by the lake, or spending time in the backyard, a few simple precautions can help keep your pet safe and comfortable all season long

Keep Them Cool

Dogs and cats can overheat much faster than people. Always make sure fresh, cool water is available, and provide plenty of shade if they’re spending time outdoors. On especially hot afternoons, it’s often best to save walks for early morning or after sunset

Watch the Pavement

A sidewalk that feels warm to your hand can be painfully hot on your pet’s paws. Try the seven-second test, if you can’t comfortably keep the back of your hand on the pavement, it’s too hot for your dog. Grass or shaded trails are much better options

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerous within minutes. If your pet can’t come inside with you, it’s safest to leave them at home or with a trusted sitter

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heavy panting, excessive drooling, weakness, vomiting, bright red gums, or confusion are all signs your pet may be overheating. Move them to a cool place, offer water, and contact your veterinarian immediately if symptoms don’t improve

Stay Hydrated on Adventures

Bring a collapsible water bowl whenever you’re hiking, visiting parks, or attending outdoor events. Regular water breaks help prevent dehydration and keep everyone happy

Check for Ticks

Summer is peak tick season throughout Upstate New York. After walks, especially in wooded or grassy areas, take a few minutes to check your pet’s ears, paws, belly, and neck. Year-round flea and tick prevention is one of the easiest ways to protect your companion

Make Time for Play

Not every summer activity needs to be an adventure. Puzzle toys, frozen treats, splash pads, and shaded play sessions are great ways to keep pets mentally and physically active while avoiding the hottest part of the day

Have a Safe and Happy Summer!

We love seeing pets enjoy everything summer has to offer. Whether your companion is staying at daycare, boarding, or just making new friends, we hope they’re in a safe, comfortable environment where tails keep wagging all season long

Here’s to sunny days, cool water, plenty of belly rubs, and unforgettable adventures with your four-legged family members
